Part 3 Reading and Writing

VI. Reading comprehension

Choose the best answer:

Faces, like fingerprints, are unique. Did you ever wonder how it is possible for us to recognize people? Even a skilled writer probably could not describe all the features that make one face different from another. Yet a very young child-or even an animal, such as a pigeon-can learn to recognize faces. We all take this ability for granted.

We also tell people apart by how they behave. When we talk about someone’s personality, we mean the ways in which he or she acts, speaks, thinks and feels that make that individual different from others.
Like the human face, human personality is very complex. But describing someone’s personality in words is somewhat easier than describing his face. If you were asked to describe what a “nice face” looked like, you probably would have a difficult time doing so. But if you were asked to describe a “nice person”, you might begin to think about someone who was kind, considerate, friendly, warm, and so on.
There are many words to describe how a person thinks, feels and acts. Gordon Allport, an American psychologist, found nearly 18,000 English words characterizing differences in people’s behavior. And many of us use this information as a basis for describing, or typing, his personality. Bookworms, conservatives(守旧派), military types—people are described with such terms.
People have always tried to “type” each other. Actors in early Greek drama wore masks to show the audience whether they played the villain’s or the hero’s role. In fact, the words “person” and “personality” come from the Latin persona, meaning “mask”. Today, most television and movie actors do not wear masks. But we can easily tell the “good guys” from the “bad guys” because the two types differ in appearance as well as in actions.

The Earth Is Getting Greener

NASA has got some good news for us. The world is a greener place today than it was 20 years ago. How does this happen? Well, it appears China and India are leading the change.

NASA researchers compared satellite data from the mid-1990s to today. They found that global green leaf area had i_____76_____ by five percent since the early 2000s. That’s about the s _____77_____ area as the entire Amazon rainforest. At first, the researchers were unsure what caused the large rise in greening around the planet. After f _____78_____ investigation, they found that greening was mostly located in China and India.

China and India have the world’s biggest p _____79_____. In the past, they were considered to have overexploited land, water and other resources for economic growth. But now, the two countries are r _____80_____ for the largest greening of the planet in the past two decades. The tree-planting programs in both countries have made huge contributions to the global greening trend.

China has carried out programs to protect and expand forest. These programs were developed to reduce the effects of soil erosion, air pollution and climate change. India continues to b _____81_____ world records in tree planting. It was reported that 800,00 Indians planted 50 million trees just in one day in 2016.

The greening change has also resulted from the cultivation of food crops. Both countries have greatly increased food production in order to feed their people.

H _____82_____, the research warned that we should not be content with the situation. The natural vegetation in tropical regions is decreasing. The gain in global greenness does not offset the losses.

Wake up, boys and girls! Raise your hand if you try to repair your tired body by sleeping in on weekends. A new study says this h _____83_____ might not be a good idea for your waistline and your health.

The second group was allowed to sleep only five hours each night. The third group was asked to sleep for five hours Monday through Friday and then allowed to sleep as much as they liked over a weekend. But it was put back on the short sleep schedule the next Monday.

Both the second and third groups ate more snacks at night and gained weight. They also saw a decrease in insulin sensitivity, a warning sign for diabetes. Researchers have long known a lack of sleep can cause weight gain and increase health risks. But it was s _____86_____ that the third group had been more affected than the second one.

“Even though people in the third group slept as much as they could on the weekend, it was not e _____87_____,” said Professor Kenneth Wright, who led the study. “When they went back to short sleep schedule the next week, their body failed to control blood sugar. So what should we do if sleeping in over the weekend is not good choice? Professor Wright summed it up in two words: sleep longer.
